Temporary Visitor Driver's License
What Is a TVDL in Illinois?
Since January 2013, immigrants with a non-visa status in Illinois have had the option to apply for a temporary visitor driver's license (TVDL). This is good news. Not only will it give countless individuals and families the freedom to legally drive, but it will also make our roads more secure throughout Illinois.
Obtaining a TVDL, however, is not the simplest of processes. An individual must schedule an appointment, go through a verification phase, and, if the driver has been caught using a falsified license in the past, resolve a host of other complications. At Johnson Law Group, we know how exciting the opportunity to establish yourself as a legal driver of Illinois can be—and how frustrating it is when difficulties keep you from doing so. Our driver's licence lawyers have helped reinstate hundreds of Illinois driver's licenses, including TVDLs. We are well-versed in the application procedure and know how to anticipate and counter any hurdles that stand between you and a legal driving status.
Qualifications for TVDLs
Not every individual with non-visa status is eligible for a TVDL. There is a review process each applicant must submit to and then wait for the Secretary of State to process.
To qualify for a TVDL, an applicant must:
- Pass road, vision, and written exams
- Provide a valid ID (passport or consular ID)
- Proof of Illinois residence of at least one year
- Proof of insurance for the vehicle they plan to use for road test
The Secretary of State (DMV) may require further proof of residence, but these are the basic requirements. There is a $30 fee for this application process. A review of your driving record is also required, so if you have significant infractions, or if you have been caught using a false license, then it is critical that you seek counsel from an Illinois driver's license attorney. At Johnson Law Group, we can help you navigate this application process and make sure you are in compliance, even if you have prior offenses.
